Everything You Need to Know about Dental Veneers

Most people have heard the term “veneer”, but many do not know what it actually is, or how it can benefit them. Today, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about dental veneers, so that you can decide if they are right for you.

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin layers of composite or porcelain that are placed directly over the natural tooth in order to improve the individual’s aesthetics and smile line. The veneer itself is fabricated to perfectly mimic the look of a natural tooth, and in most cases it is nearly impossible to discern veneers from natural teeth.

There are two types of veneers:

  • Traditional porcelain: Require more prep. Are not reversible, but tend to be more durable and last longer.
  • Lumineers: Require less prep, are less invasive, and are reversible if the patient changes their mind.

Dental veneers are used for a number of reasons, including:

  • Closing gaps
  • Achieving a bright “Hollywood”-white smile
  • Correcting slight crooked or misaligned teeth
  • Customizing the shape of the teeth
  • Combating sensitivity in the teeth
  • Shrinking the appearance of the gums
  • Improving self confidence

How are Veneers Placed in The Mouth?

The process of placing the veneers is quite simple. To get started, your dentist will take a set of impressions that will be used to make the veneers.

A thin layer of enamel will then be removed from the surface of the teeth in order to prep them for the veneers. Temporary veneers will be placed over the teeth, and the impressions will be sent to the lab for fabrication of your permanent veneers. You will be asked to return in about a week or two, when the permanent veneers return to the office.

You will have this time to enjoy a “test-drive” of sorts with your temporary veneers; they will give you a good idea of what you can expect your smile to look like once your treatment is complete.

When you return to have your permanent veneers placed, your dentist will remove the temporaries and cement the permanents. Your new veneers will be polished and adjusted in order to ensure that you have a comfortable and correct bite, and you will then be on your way with your beautiful new smile.

Do Veneers Require Special Care?

Once your veneers have been placed, they do not require any special maintenance or care. Simply ensure that you are thoroughly brushing and flossing twice daily and attending your regularly-scheduled cleaning and check-up appointments.

How Long Will My Veneers Last?

When properly maintained, dental veneers have the potential to last anywhere from ten to fifteen years. After this period has ended, most people have their dentist evaluate the status of their teeth and invest in a new set of veneers that will last them another decade, or even longer.
